The Yorubas are described as the most vibrant, successful, and dominant ethnic group to come out of Africa since the 20th Century. They dominated the early political and public life of Nigeria on its founding as a nation after the amalgamation by the British in 1914 with their intelligence and innovativeness. The Cocoa House (Ile Awon Agbe) was unrivalled as the tallest skyscraper in sub-Saharan Africa for decades.
It demonstrates the visionary genetic make-up of the Yoruba because the Cocoa House continued to birth unrivalled economic landmarks including The Marina in Lagos and the Wema Bank of Nigeria. The towers of The Wema Bank continue our heritage of mansions in the skies as they dot the skylines of world capitals emblematic of the irrepressible sagacity of Yoruba entrepreneurship. The Yorubas are economic giants by nature.
The Yoruba population in the Dallas-Fort Worth area is becoming significant. The Yoruba Day 2023 celebrates our heritage in addition to the clarion call to pay attention to the economic opportunities presented by our society for the advantage of group economics. It becomes important to pull resources from personal survival strategies into team efforts that can change our wealth index and empower greater recognition of our efforts within the Dallas-Fort Worth community.
What are other ethnic groups doing that we can adopt? Where do our strengths lie so that we can reinforce these? How do we energize our children to take advantage of opportunities society presents to them? These issues form the focus of our convention this year, even so, as we celebrate our achievements as an ethnic group in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
We will have academic introspection, yet our culture will be on display in colors, attire, food, and dance to dignify our traditions. We will also recognize each other’s strides as we all plan for a greater future for our heritage. I am honored to welcome you to celebrate the best of Yoruba tastes.
Please camp out with us on Veteran's Day 2023, we are expecting you!
